Piedmont’s Hidden Gems
This is the first post in the vast research that I’ve started doing into Neighborhood Secrets. I’m happy to report that so far every city in the Bay Area that I’ve explored has blown be away with the breath of dining options that I’ve encountered. While not surprising because California is well known for its gastronomy, what is surprising is just how many unknown restaurants I’ve discovered in this project. For this column, I’m going to focus on Piedmont, California. I’ve always been in awe by Piedmont, it’s smaller than other cities in the bay, but still is able to stand on its own. Here’s a fun Piedmont fact, it’s fully surrounded by Oakland! As such, Piedmont and Oakland (particularly the neighborhoods in the hills) have a small rivalry when it comes to dining. Oakland is well known for many vibrant and up and coming restaurants. Yet, Piedmont also has its fair share of exceptional restaurants, they’re just not as well known for those who are not local. Here are three of the best restaurants in Piedmont, and why they stand out from those in Oakland:
Communitē Table - This neighborhood restaurant offers California-inspired comfort food in a cozy, inviting atmosphere. The menu changes frequently to reflect the seasonality of the ingredients, but you can always expect dishes like handmade pasta, grilled meats, and creative salads. Communitē Table also offers an extensive wine list, with a focus on small-batch, organic, and biodynamic wines. What sets Communitē Table apart from Oakland restaurants is its commitment to community - the owners prioritize working with local farms and businesses, and the restaurant has a warm, family-friendly vibe that makes it a true neighborhood gem.

The Wolf - This iconic restaurant has been a fixture in the East Bay dining scene since it opened in 1975. Bay Wolf serves contemporary California cuisine with a Mediterranean influence, and its menu features classic dishes like roasted chicken, grilled fish, and pasta. What makes The Wolf better than Oakland restaurants is its attention to detail - every dish is expertly prepared and beautifully presented, and the service is attentive and friendly. The Wolf also has a cozy, romantic atmosphere that is perfect for a special occasion or date night.

Homestead - This Michelin-starred restaurant offers refined farm-to-table cuisine in a rustic, cozy setting. The menu focuses on locally-sourced ingredients, and the dishes are simple yet elegant. Homestead also has an impressive cocktail program, with creative and expertly-crafted drinks that are as delicious as they are beautiful. What sets Homestead apart from Oakland restaurants is its attention to detail - every aspect of the dining experience, from the service to the decor, is thoughtful and intentional.
